About the newsfeed
In the newsfeed, members can:
- Create a post
- Reply to posts
- React to posts
- Edit or delete their own posts
- Copy direct links to posts
- Mark posts as objectionable
- Follow hyperlinks to files, groups, events, user profiles, organization profiles, and more
A member’s newsfeed contains all content that their segmentation and permissions allow. A member who is segmented out of a forum, file, or event category doesn’t see that content in the newsfeed. A member who isn’t invited to a private event doesn’t see updates for that event.
These actions add content to the top of the newsfeed:
- Creating an event
- Responding Going or Interested to an event
- Creating a blog post
- Uploading a file
- Creating a profile post
- Commenting on an event, blog, or file
- Creating a forum topic
- Replying to a forum topic
Creating a post
Posts you create in the newsfeed appear to the entire community and in your profile newsfeed. Use posts to ask questions or share content and ideas without creating a full forum post.
- Select Start a post in the newsfeed. The Create a post dialog box opens.
- Enter your post text. The text editor includes formatting, media, image, and tagging options.
- (Optional) Select Friends Only in the Audience dropdown to show the post only to your friends. The default is Everyone.
- Select Post. The post appears on the sitewide newsfeed and on your profile newsfeed.
Using the text editor
The text editor supports:
- Text formatting, such as bold, italic, bullets, indenting, block quotes, highlighting, and headings
- Emojis and special characters
- Embedded media, such as tweets, YouTube or Vimeo videos, and Instagram or Facebook posts
- Images, with captions, alternative text, alignment, and size options
- @ mentions and hashtags
To embed media, select Insert media, or paste or type the media URL directly into the editor. To insert an image, select Insert image, or drag and drop the image into the editor.
To tag a user or hashtag, enter @ or # followed by your text. A menu opens with matching community users or existing hashtags to select. After posting, select a tagged user to see their profile, or select a hashtag to search for other posts with it.
Replying to a post
Members view and respond to all newsfeed content, including forum topics. Content appears with its comments underneath, so members can comment, reply to other users, and hold entire conversations on one screen.
- Select Reply on the post or forum topic. The Reply box opens below the post.
- Select the Reply box, then enter your reply text. The text editor has the same options as in posts.
- Select Reply. The reply appears on the sitewide newsfeed post and, for a forum topic, in the forum discussion thread.
Reacting to a post
Point to Like on a post to view and select from the available reactions.
Each post shows how many reactions it has. Select the reaction count to see a list of users and their reactions.
Interacting with files and events
Point to a posted file or event to view additional details. Select the file or event name to open its details page.
File posts show the number of comments and downloads. Select Comment on a file or event post to add a comment. Comments also appear on the file or event details page.
