The notification a member receives depends on how their renewal invoice was created. The system generates some invoices automatically, and administrators create others by hand. This article explains the difference, and how to find which template applies to a member type.

Automatic member type notifications
When the system generates a renewal invoice, it sends the notification configured on the member type. To set these up:
- Go to Database > Member Types.
- Select Edit Notifications for the member type.
- Set each notification to send a number of days or months before the member's expiration date.
Notifications in the Before Membership Expiration column send ahead of the expiration date. In the example above, a member 2 months from expiring receives the first notification in the list.
For more information, see Customizing renewal notifications.
Invoice template notifications
When an administrator creates a renewal invoice manually, the system sends the notification linked to the invoice template instead. To create an invoice manually, open the member's profile and select Actions > Renew.
To edit the email that sends with a manual invoice:
- Go to Financial > Invoices.
- Select Invoice Templates.
- Under Template Notifications, select EDIT NEW INVOICE EMAIL.
Finding the invoice template for a member type
Each member type links to one invoice template. To check which one:
- Go to Database > Member Types.
- Select the member type.
- Under Renewal Payment settings, check the Invoice Template dropdown.
