To provide custom messaging and instructions for members in E-list messages, you can include a custom footer.  To do so, add your messaging or instructions to the HTML or plain text editors in the Email Footer section, just beneath the Goodbye Email section:

What is the "Custom Domain"?  Is this something that can be changed by the administrator to use our organizations own web address, such as, list@NJ****.org, without needed the .memberclicks.net?

Hi Joseph - you're correct, you can add your custom domain so that e-list addresses are @customdomain rather than @xxxx.memberclicks.net.  To make this work, you'll need to create an alias for the @customdomain address that points to the @xxxx.memberclicks.net address.

So if someone is added as a moderator, how do they approve the messages?

  • Avatar

Hi Gail - A moderator can access the elist web interface through their profile (as normal) and they will see a red asterisk next to any messages which are pending approval.  Clicking to view the pending message will give them the option to approve or delete the message.

But where in their profile do they find it?

Sorry, but I logged in under the moderator's name and didn't see how they would see a red asterisk.

    Hi Gail,

No problem at all, I'm happy to help!  When members or moderators log into the front-end of the site, they will see the My Features tab in their profile.  Under the My Features tab, members can access their elists.  Clicking the name of any elists they are subscribed to will bring them to the messages page of the elist.  If the member is a moderator and their is a message pending approval, they'll see a page very similar to below:

    Screen_shot_2011-07-25_at_9.40.10_AM.png

Clicking the name of the message will display the content and the ability to tag and Approve or Delete.  This page looks like the following:

Hope this helps clarify and please let us know if any other questions come up!

Is there a way to exclude the original message text from the replies, as in traditional email?

The ability to hinge subscription permissions on an attribute link is outstanding (kudos!). Now...if only there was a way to subscribe people en masse when a list is initially created... (that is, allow them to opt-out rather than opt-in....)

@Mona, currently excluding the original message text is a product of the end-user's email client settings.  There isn't a way to have MC automatically remove previous messages in a reply, although I definitely see the benefit.

@Ashley, Thanks!  You can subscribe members to an elist through the Members tab of the elist page.  The Add Members modal window has a search box that uses the same attributes that are configured as Quick Search attributes.  So, you can, for example, add all of the members that match a Quick Search result.  When adding members as an admin, the search results allow you to override any elist permissions you have set up, so you'll want to make sure that you have the intended search results before mass-subscribing.  There's some more information here on subscribing members to an elist.

Also, I love the idea you posted here.  This would definitely make bulk additions easier.

@Duncan: that's great. I didn't know that search uses the Quick Search criteria. For us, this means we could temporarily add a group attribute to the quick search criteria; search for 'XYZ Group'; run through and click everybody who shows up. Not quite automatic, but definitely better than looking up individual people and adding them individually.

I work with ten or so member communities in our association. I've been pushing the e-list for about a year and no one's really taken me up on it. One group is seriously considering it now and what you outlined will address one of their concerns (adding a whole bunch of people to start with). Their other concern is that they want an e-list subscription to be automatic upon a member joining a particular group. I'll add this to the ideas area....

    Cheers,

    a

Can i send a message to the email list from the backend admin page? It seems like I can only do this through logging in as a "member" vs as an admin on the frontend. Please advise. Thank you.

Alexandra - There isn't currently an option to add messages while logged in on the admin side.

Regarding the Customer Footers, are those messages which appear in all emails sent to the E-list?

One of the reasons we pay a lot of money for this service is to have a single record for all members and any change you make to that record flows to the others connected to it. Today I discovered that when I change the email address of a member I also have to change it in each e-list they are subscribed to.  This is a problem I was trying to avoid with memberclicks.

@Robert - Exactly. That custom footer will be in the bottom of every message sent out by the e-list.

@Tom and Ynez - Thanks for the feedback. When e-lists were originally designed, one of the big requests was to have independence from the profile address and for each e-list. I can definitely see the benefit of keeping in them sync though. Would it work for that to be a default additional option in the preferences?

Kinsey, I think that the e-list membership should be totally coordinated with the main database as default.  Folks that want to separate should have the option of doing that is possible.   I like the way Constant Contacts distribution lists work.  It is a lot easier as well to manage than the MC system.

My latest thought is that MC needs to allow us to access our mc databases from Constant Contact or Mailchimp.  Because they have superior email preparation and management systems you don't have to spend resrouces on improving that part of the site and we can get a superior email product right away.  In fact, you should look at similar links to other systems like eventbrite and stayclassy for event and donor management. Then mc could focus on the core functions of member data management.

@Ynez - thanks for your candid feedback. I've passed along your suggestions on how to manage the relationship between making a member inactive, and their subscription to the e-list. Just to make sure I'm fully understanding, when you talk about canceling a member, you're referring to the manual moving of their profile from active to inactive, correct?

@Tom - thanks for your message. We recognize that there are times where external integration is best - JobTarget, or payment processing, for example. That said, we do plan to keep core functionality (event registration, e-lists, etc.) internal.

It would be REALLY helpful if we could sort the list of elist messages by author. Sometimes, despite our many recommendations, they use the same subject line, so the message gets buried in the list of released messages, usually under the date of the first message they sent with that same subject line. Maybe the repeat subject line should show up under the most recent date sent, if you won't make the author column sortable.

Is there anyway to automatically add a user to an e-list that is permissioned by attribute?  We have a Yes/No attribute and would like for all Yes to automatically become a subscriber to their e-list.

  • Avatar

Hi Sharon - Unfortunately there isn't a way to automatically add users to an e-list. What you can do, though, is a simple workaround using the Quick Search check box in each attribute. If you'll send a ticket in to the Help Team (help@memberclicks.com) with details on which e-list you're adding to, and which attribute you want to search by, we'll be happy to walk you through it!

Is there a way to export all of the members of a particular e-list?

  • Avatar
    Chris Byess

    Hi Nancy,

Yes, it is possible to generate a list of your E-List members through the Advanced Search. Once you enter your Advanced Search, open the 'Search Using Filters' tab, and within the options listed, E-List should be one of them. I checked for you, and saw that it was the last option. Select the E-List, then 'search.' After you receive your search results, just hit the export button in the upper-right corner of the page. Do that and you should be good to go!

Is there a way to add a secondary email address to an e-List? Let me explain. Each profile in our system for our temple represents a family unit, with one member of the family being the "profile owner", In the profile there's also "spouse" information, and typically that spouse has his or her own email address, but the two of them share one profile.

Let's say that my wife is the profile owner. But I want to receive e-list messages directed to the "mens club" of my temple. I don't have a need for my own profile, but I want to be on that mailing list with my own email address. How can I do that?

  • Avatar
    Chris Byess

    Hi Mike,

I'm afraid that adding a secondary email to receive messages from the E-List isn't possible at this time.  Only one email address can be linked to a profile, with no current way to route a message to a second email. If you have further questions on this, just let the help team know at help@memberclicks.com!

Is it possible to delete a message from an elist?

  • Avatar
    Leo Perales

We have our e-list replies set to user's choice.  However, whenever a member replies to either directly to sender or replies to all, the previous message thread is lost and only the current message shows up.  Our members want to see the entire previous message thread to know what the replier is responding to.  Can this be added?  It was working before, but it changed when we switched from reply to all to user's choice.  Please advise.  Thanks!

    Hi Shunte',

A message cannot be deleted from your end, but if needed you could send the help team a message and we could see if our engineering department could do so.

    Hi Leo,

How the message threads are displayed within the email client aren't controlled on our end, so if changing the message distribution settings caused the client to change the way the threads are displayed, a change to the display could only be made from within the email client settings.
